템테이션에 등장하는 북스프(Book Soup) 서점은 실제서점이다

Book Soup

이 블로그의 제목이기도 한 ‘북스프(Book Soup)’는 더글라스 케내디의 ‘템테이션(Temptation)’에 등장하는 서점이다. 소설의 배경이 되는 헐리우드에 실제로 운영중인 서점으로 다양한 작가들의 책을 접할 수 있다. 소설의 주인공은 최고의 작가가 되는 것이지만 11년간 그의 작품을 받아 주는 곳은 없었다. 하지만, 주인공(데이비드 아미타지)은 끝까지 꿈을 포기하기 않고 계속해서 습작을 만든다. 물론, 가정을 꾸려 생활하는 것이 가장 힘든 현실. 주인공이 생활비를 벌 수 있던 곳이 바로 북스프이다. 자신의 작품을 세상에 알리지 못했지만, 항상 새로운 작품들이 모이는 서점에서 일하는 것이 아이러니이다.

Book Soup is an independent bookstore located at 8818 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, and is the largest general interest independent bookstore in Hollywood.^[1] included Muhammad Ali, Howard Stern, Annie Leibovitz, Chuck Palahniuk, Jenna Jameson, and The Doors.^[5] Considered a "cultural fixture" of the Sunset Strip,^[1] Book Soup has also been featured as a location in a number of films and television shows.^[3]

북스프는 캘리포니아 웨스트 헐리우드 선셋도로 8818번지에 위치한 헐리우드에서 가장 큰 개인서점이다. 이 서점은 크고 넘어질 듯한 선반과 미로처럼 복잡한 책장에 가득 꽃혀있는 연예계, 관광 책들로 유명하다. 특히 연예계에서 유명한데, 무하마드 알리, 호워드 스턴, 애니 로보비츠, 척 팔라닉, 제나 제임슨과 더 도어와 같은 유명 연예인 작가들을 초청하는 이벤트를 계속해서 열고 있다.

The store was founded in 1975 by Glenn Goldman.^[4][6] Goldman and David Mackler (both in graduate school at UCLA at the time) raised $50,000 and, after doing extensive research on where to locate their store, opened Book Soup on Sunset Boulevard.^[3] The rationale for the location, as Goldman explained, was that there "had been a period of upheaval here in the '60s—of thought and ideas—and I felt that the people who lived in the neighborhood would and could really support a bookstore."^[3] Book Soup (the name was the least-offensive of those proposed by Goldman and Mackler) was nestled between a head shop and strip club.^[3] Mackler designed the store's interior.^[3]

서점은 1975년 글렌 골드만에의해 세워졌으며, 골드만와 데이비드 맥클러(두명 모두 같은 시기에 UCLA를 졸업)가 $50,000을 투자하고 가게를 어디에 오픈할지 대규모의 조사를 한 후 북스프를 선셋가에 세웠다. 설립자인 골드만의 설명에 따르면 북스프 입지는 그곳이60년대(사상과 이념들) 동안 격변지이고, 그의 생각에 주변의 이웃들이 서점을 분명히 이용할 것이라는 확신이 들었다고 한다. 북스프(이 이름은 골드만과 맥클렛간에 최소한의 이견이 없는 것이었다)는 이발소와 스트립클럽 사이에 자리를 잡았다. 맥클러는 서점의 인테리어를 디자인했다.

 

In 1985, Book Soup again nearly closed, but another publisher's representative loaned it the money to stay afloat.^[1] Book Soup added a storefront newsstand, "News Mews," and began selling thousands of domestic and international periodicals and newspapers.^[1] In the late 1980s, Book Soup moved two blocks further down Sunset Boulevard to its current, more spacious location^[3][6] and expanded to 50,000 titles. It also began earning a reputation for art, photography, film and music books as well as for hosting high-profile events featuring authors and celebrities such as  Gore Vidal, James Ellroy, Mikal Gilmore, Edward Albee, Robert Wagner, and Tom Stoppard.

서점과 직원 두명(골드만을 호함해서)은 지난 20년간 수익을 내지 못했다. 거의 망할뻔했지만, 한 출판사 대표가 서점의 신용선을 재설립하는데 도움을 주어 사업을 회복하였다. 1985년에 북스프는 다시 망할 위기에 놓였지만 이번에도 또다른 출판사 대표가 부도나지 않을 정도의 대출을 해준다.

북스프는 “News Mews”라는 신문가판대를 가게앞에 설치하여 수천가지의 국내신문, 해외 정기간행물과 신문들을 판매하기 시작했다. 1980년대 후반 북스프는 현재의 더 넓고 50,000권으로 확장할 수 있는 넓은 공간의 두 블럭 더 아래 선셋가로 이전했다. 또한, 예술, 사진, 영화와 음악 서적분야에서 Gore Vidal, James Ellroy, Mikal Gilmore, Edward Albee, Robert Wagner, and Tom Stoppard와 같은 유명 작가를 서점에 초대해 명성을 얻기 시작했다.

A second Book Soup store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California, opened in 2002 but closed in 2007 due to high rent and the impact of competition from Amazon.com and large discount chain stores such as Wal-Mart and Target.^[2][7]

캘리포니아 코스타 메사의 사우스 코스트플라자에 두번째 북스프 매장이 2002년에 오픈했으나, 높은 임대료와 아마존닷컴 그리고 원마트와 타켓과 같은 대형 할인점과의 경쟁으로 2007년 문을 닫았다.

Goldman announced he was selling Book Soup on January 2, 2009, then died of pancreatic cancer on January 3, 2009.^[2]  and Book Soup signed an agreement October 9, 2009, to purchase Book Soup.^[8]

골드만은 2009년 1월 2일 북스프를 매각한다는 발표를 했고 2009년 1월 3일 췌장암으로 사망했다. Vroman's Bookstore 과 북스프는 2009년 10월 9일 북스프를 매입하는 계약을 체결했다.
